Meteorology is one of the areas of earth science study. The classes monitor the weather for two weeks. The study includes the barometric pressure, wind speed, precipitation, fluctuation of temperature, and cloud cover and type. The data is then submitted to a group of global scientists.

Taking part in this unit allows the students to use a variety of science skills that will help them discover and interpret the natural world around them, which is an earth science course outcome for these eighth graders. Various stages of this activity are pictured below.

Meteorology 1The precipitation gauge is assembled. Most of the weather monitoring equipment is kept in the weather instrument box in the courtyard.
Regular and digital thermometers are used to record the highs and lows.Meteorology 2
Meteorology 3Information needs to be recorded each day during this unit.

Students from all parts of the world submit data online to The GLOBE Program. We submit data on weather, landforms, and water quality in our area. Visit the GLOBE web site for more information.
