The second grade students began this project by looking at several pictures of fish. After choosing a picture, the students drew the fish on a large piece of paper. After cutting out the fish shape, the pattern was placed on a flat slab of clay. Using a clay fettling knife, the fish was cut out from the clay. Patterns were added using a variety of clay texture tools. Finally, the fish were glazed and fired in the kiln. Working on this project allowed the students to create a product from clay, which is a sculpture unit outcome for second graders. The clay fish are shown below.
