The students began this project by painting 3-6 branches on a piece of black construction paper using brown and white paint. Next, the students used a toothbrush to paint the pine-like needles of an evergreen tree. For the ornaments, the students cut out 2 to 3 circles and decorated them with cut out shapes or painted patterns on the Christmas balls. Finally, a gray hanging top and string were added.

Working on this project allowed the first graders to develop skills to properly use brush and paint, which is a first grade painting unit outcome. The ornaments are displayed below.
