"Children are not empty bottles to be filled,
but rather candles to be lit."

The basic skills are taught in second grade in many ways. Our language arts curriculum is divided into six different themes. They are: Pet Show Today, Be A Nature Detective, Good Friends, That’s Incredible, Family Photos, and Tell Me A Tale. Science and social studies are integrated into these themes when appropriate. Teaching strategies include both small group and large group instruction in order to meet the needs of all learners. Our Sitton spelling program emphasizes correct spelling of high-frequency words. These are words that students use most often in their writing. Students also enjoy learning how to write in cursive using the D’Nealian program. Calculation skills as well as problem-solving skills are taught in a variety of ways. Among these are calendar, time, computers, and hands-on activities.

Special highlights throughout the second grade year include our pet show, Christmas plays, and Grandparent's Day. Students often look forward to these events.

Mrs. Brackey and Mrs. Gaskill work closely as a team to ensure that all second graders receive similar learning experiences throughout the year. Weekly planning times allow for collaboration on curriculum decisions. We are committed to offering a learning environment which fosters teaching and learning for all.
